Anyone who has examined their voter information pamphlet knows that
there are more than just a couple of political parties out there.
However, the media, and most voters, give credence to only the two
old parties, the Democratic and the Republican.
The next largest party is the Libertarian party, followed by the reform
party, the Green party, Peace and Freedom party, Independent party, American
Workers party, Constitutional party, and so on.
Every political party represents some culmination of political ideology
which has historically been expressed as some point along the left-right
political spectrum. |
The distinction between the Left and the Right began as a reference
to seating arrangements of the French Assembly in the 1790s. The monarchists
sat on the right, the republicans on the left. Modern usage usually breaks
down into conservatives and liberals, Republicans and Democrats, reactionaries
and radicals, capitalists and socialists.. ----more |
Political Identification
The one-dimensional left-right line imposes a severe limitation on political
variation. If you are not "right" or "left", you are stuck somewhere
in the middle. But even people in the "middle" may disagree with
each other.
Imagine a person who supports gun control and opposes 'abortion choice'.
Where on the above scale would you place this person?
Now imagine a person with the opposing view on each issue.
Where would you place this person on the above scale.
Introducing: The World's Greatest Advance in Political Scaling
Introduced to the world in 1971 by David Nolan, the two dimensional
'Nolan
Chart', provides a lot more room to accommodate the many political
opinions held by people.
Not only does the Nolan chart show what people think the government
should do, but it also show how much people think it should do;
in other words, how big it should be.
If you can spare about five minutes, you can go and take
the quiz right now to find out where you stand in the new political
dimension. |
